Frankenstein And The DIY Website Monster

I recently wanted Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein and the mad scientist vibes definitely reminded me of someone. Me when I'm in the middle of creating a website or doing research, simultaneously feeling like a genius and frantic.

Let me know if this sounds familiar. You gather templates. You gather design inspiration from Pinterest. You gather a suspicious number of YouTube tutorials that contradict each other. You drag, drop, and tweak until finally; your creation is alive.

Mood board collage created by Redesignia inspired by horror aesthetic, vampires, haunted castles and a black and red color palette.

And just like that famous Victorian scientist, you look at what you’ve built and think: "Oh no. What have I done?"

You’re not the villain of this story. But your website might be lurching through the digital village asking for help.

The Thrill Of Assembly

It’s really exciting in the early stages of DIY website building. You have a vision and the invincible feeling that every tool promises that it’s beginner friendly. One of my favorite parts of using a no code platform like Squarespace is how easy it is to use. It feels like magic.

One minute you’re choosing a template. Then you’re adjusting colors. Then you convince yourself you might have secretly become a developer overnight. This was almost exactly my web designer journey years ago.

Just like Victor in his dimly lit lab, you experience the thrill of creation. Then the creature stands up and you realize the left arm is shorter than the right, the eyes don’t match, and all you see is imperfections.

Your Site Looks A Little Patchwork

Most DIY websites don’t go wrong because the creator lacks talent. They go wrong because the creator lacks a plan and strategy. That’s when the “Franken-site” begins to show itself.

Here are some of the signs:

  • Five different fonts battling for dominance

  • A color palette with too many shades of green

  • Cheesy stock images borrowed from nineteen sources

  • A homepage that loads slowly and dramatically

It’s not that any one part is bad. They aren’t aligned, structured, or treated as parts of the same living system. Frankenstein’s creation wasn’t evil; he was misunderstood and poorly assembled. Many websites suffer the same fate.

Every Monster Needs A Mentor

Victor Frankenstein’s greatest flaw wasn’t the creation, it was giving up too soon. A good designer does the opposite by staying with the project. Guiding and shaping it while making sure the design elements stay cohesive.

Your website deserves someone who brings structure, strategy, and clarity to the process. Someone who makes sure the typography speaks with one consistent voice, the color palette has purpose, and every section flows smoothly instead of scaring the villagers.

A website shouldn’t feel like a creature stitched together from spare parts. It should feel like a confident extension of your brand. A living, breathing representation of your creative identity.

Building A Website That Lives Beautifully

A website that fits your brand isn’t built in the dark. It’s crafted with intention.

That means:

  • Strategic structure from top to bottom

  • Pages designed for readability, usability, and conversion

  • Smooth performance across mobile, tablet, and desktop

  • Branding decisions made with purpose, not desperation

When your site is built with clarity, it feels complete. No confusing behavior and no villagers brandishing pitchforks in the comments section.

A Better Ending For Your Creation

If you built your own website and it’s a little patchwork, don’t feel bad. It’s totally normal. The first draft of anything will be a little rough. Sometimes you have to build the monster before you understand what the finished creation should actually look like.

But your brand deserves to evolve. It deserves to grow into something polished, intentional, and fully alive (in a welcoming way, not a tragic 19th-century-novel way). And if now feels like the moment to give your digital creature a better future, I have something special happening this week.
